Science Grade 3 Task Cards

Science Grade 3 Task Cards are used in conjunction with Montessori materials in a traditional classroom. The Task Cards have been created to invite children to perform tasks using materials around the classroom. They provide guidance and demonstrate how the Montessori curriculum and materials satisfy the Next Generation Science Standards. The Task Cards cover the four following disciplinary cores ideas:

Physical Sciences - Standards 3.5, 3.6: e.g. “From the cultural shelves or the kitchen, investigate the physical property of magnetic force in ten objects. Using a magnet, note if the object is “strong magnetic”, “weak magnetic”, or “non-magnetic”.” - Standard 3.5A

Earth and Space Sciences - Standards 3.7, 3.8: e.g. “Bring the Sun & Earth charts. Draw a picture in your science copybook to show the relationship between the position of the earth and sun at the winter and summer solstices.” - Standard 3.8C

Life Sciences - Standards 3.9, 3.10: e.g. ‘In your science copybook, make a column headed “Inherited Characteristics of Animals”. Write five physical characteristics beneath.” - Standard 3.10B

Engineering, Technology, and Application of Sciences tasks are included in all disciplinary core ideas above: e.g. “From the cultural shelves, bring a ball and ramp to a rug. Measure the ramp in inches or centimeters. How does the position and motion of the ball change when it is released from different points on the ramp?” -Standard 3.6B

Through the use of Science Grade 3 Task Cards, children are provided learning opportunities to perform and develop skills such as:

• constructing arguments
• representing data
• obtaining and combining information
• analyzing and interpreting data
• planning and conducting experiments
• making observations and measuring
• using evidence to support findings
