The Study of the Circle/Area Lesson Plan

The Study of the Circle

Age: 9 -14

The work the child has done with equivalency, starting years ago with the Constructive Triangles and the Equivalency Insets has brought them to this moment. Ideally, we want them to firmly hold in their consciousness the rectangle divided into squares, a clear understanding that this is area. We also wish for them to remember all the other figures, with partial squares, that we were able to convert into the rectangles to determine their formulas. Equivalency of figures and area of figures are two sides of the same coin.

The study of the area of polygons, all those straight lines, is a concrete experience. We will use this firm foundation to bring the child to a fascinating idea, one that connects them to the ancients that also struggled to find a formula for the area of a circle. What if a polygon had not ten sides but a hundred? A thousand? A hundred thousand? What if sides could become points?
